Tried Music Before but it did not “Catch?”

The number of people that have had piano lessons just in America, somewhere in their lives, but cannot play in their adult years is something that haunted Donna Cercone.

She was almost one of those statistics!   Then she started asking herself many questions – one of which was “WHY?” We are very intelligent people – Why could we not learn music and play in our adult years?

Being an educator, she realized that if she did not like the results, she needed to look at how it was being taught! It was then that she realized that music was being taught as an alphabet rather than a language.

Being an avid reader, she knew she absolutely would not want to
SPELL a book-letter by letter, she wanted to READ the book!

That began the process of discovering how to READ music as a language and the results were amazing. People who had taken lessons before, were now able to play songs that they had thought were way out of their reach.

So if you tried music before and it did not catch it is not your fault and it does not mean that you have no talent for music!   It just means that you were only taught the alphabet and were not taught HOW to practice a song.

We were usually just assigned a song and rarely told how to practice it!   I do not recall any one of the 11 teachers that I have had that ever taught me HOW to practice!
